It turns out the future is what we make it…

So IBC kicked off this year with a great session around the future of broadcasting – very well attended, with the room eager to get the magic answers on how we tread the path ahead.

In fact, I was 10 minutes late to the session – I was worried I might miss it and no-one would tell me!

I couldn’t help but notice though, that as the panel discussed the emerging world of multi-screen, anytime, anywhere access, that the forum room was filled with folks using tablets, smart phones and pc’s to achieve precisely that – that’s not the future. That’s right now.

The conversation then flowed into the more evolving and emerging trends about social media, and there’s a refreshing air of ‘not trying to control it’ (at least too much) from all involved on this one. And why not – because that’s kind of the point of it – to let audience engagement and feedback drive the creation and engagement process.

And that’s when I realised that even though I missed the first 10 minutes, I was never in any danger of missing the big secret. We’re not actually at a point anymore where we can get an auditorium full of clever folks together who’ll tell you what the future is. We’re in a much braver, interesting and terrifying place! We’re in a space where technology has enabled – through direct audience feedback and diverse interaction – to have the future created as we live it and watch it…
